Most skincare advice online is written for cool, dry, temperate climates and lighter skin. In India, the conditions are different — high humidity for much of the year, strong UV all year, hard water in many cities, and melanin-rich skin that behaves differently. A routine that works in London can quietly fail in Chennai. Here is how to adjust.
Melanin-rich skin: what changes
Deeper skin tones are not "the same routine, darker". The practical differences:
- Pigmentation is the headline concern. Melanin-rich skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — the dark marks left behind after a pimple, a cut, or any irritation. A single aggressive product that irritates the skin can leave a mark that lasts months.
- This makes gentleness a strategy, not a preference. Because irritation causes pigmentation, over-exfoliating or stacking harsh actives can make the exact problem you are trying to fix worse.
- Sunscreen does double duty. UV both ages skin and darkens existing marks. For Indian skin, daily sunscreen is as much about keeping pigmentation from deepening as it is about preventing burns.
The takeaway: treat gently, protect hard, and be patient with dark spots — they fade with sun protection and time, not with scrubbing.
Humidity: lighten the textures
For most of the year, much of India is humid. Humid air means skin loses less water to the environment, so heavy creams that feel great in a dry winter feel greasy and clog pores in a Mumbai monsoon.
Adjust by texture, not by brand:
- Swap rich creams for gels and light lotions in humid months.
- Gel or foaming cleansers suit oily, sweaty skin better than cream cleansers.
- If you get congestion or bumps in humid weather, a BHA (salicylic acid) a few times a week helps keep pores clear.
- Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid still work — they pull moisture from humid air into the skin.
In the dry North-Indian winter, reverse this: richer moisturiser, gentler cleanser, more focus on the barrier.
Hard water
Many Indian cities have hard water — high in calcium and magnesium. Hard water can leave a film, make cleansers harder to rinse, and leave some skin feeling tight and dry after washing.
Cheap fixes:
- Use a gentle, low-foaming cleanser — you need less product to get clean, so less residue.
- Rinse thoroughly, then moisturise on slightly damp skin to lock water in.
- If tightness is bad, a bathroom shower/tap filter genuinely helps, and costs less than most serums.
Sun: the non-negotiable, all year
India gets strong UV year-round, not just in summer, and not just when it is sunny — UV passes through cloud. For skin here, sunscreen is the highest-value product you can own.
- SPF 30 minimum, 50 if you are out a lot. Broad-spectrum.
- Apply enough — about two finger-lengths for face and neck. Most people use a quarter of what they need.
- Reapply if you are outdoors for hours or sweating.
- Newer sunscreens formulated for humid, oily conditions feel far lighter than the thick white pastes people remember. If a sunscreen feels horrible, you will not wear it — so it is worth finding one you actually like.
Sunscreen prevents most visible ageing, lowers cancer risk, and — for Indian skin specifically — keeps pigmentation from deepening. If you do one thing from this whole article, do this.
A climate-aware routine
Putting it together, adjusted for humid Indian conditions:
- AM: gentle gel cleanser (or water rinse) → light moisturiser → sunscreen.
- PM: proper cleanse → one gentle active (niacinamide for evenness is a safe, non-irritating start) → light moisturiser.
- Monsoon/summer: lighter textures, add a BHA if congested.
- Winter (dry North): richer moisturiser, ease off exfoliation.
Manage expectations on pigmentation
Dark spots and uneven tone are the most common concern and the slowest to fix. Realistic timelines: PIH fades over weeks to many months, and only if you protect it from the sun the whole time. Niacinamide, vitamin C, and gentle exfoliation help at the edges, but sun protection is what makes them work. Anyone promising to erase pigmentation in a week is selling something.
Gentle, consistent, well-protected skin wins here. The climate is demanding, but the routine is still short.
